Overview:

In this course, learners will be presented with research that describes racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in end-of-life care and hospice enrollment; possible reasons for disparities; racial differences and similarities in hospice caregiving; and opportunities to reflect on ways to improve racial and socioeconomic disparities in hospice care. In addition to didactic Power Point presentation, learners will interact and engage with each other, share experiences, and process what it is like to care for persons across cultures. Learners will discuss ways to provide culturally-sensitive care and communication.

Objectives:

1. Discuss racial and ethnic disparities in end-of-life care in the United States.
2. Explore the role of social determinants of health in hospice decision-making and care.
3. Explore racial differences and similarities in hospice family caregiving.
4. Examine personal beliefs or biases that may contribute to differences in care.

Speaker:

Dr. Lauren Starr, PhD, MBE, RN
Dr. Starr is an interdisciplinary nurse scientist, postdoctoral fellow in palliative and end-of-life care, and bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Her team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, and informatics faculty from Penn and Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Her current research focuses on two themes: 1) behavioral interventions to improve hospice family caregiver health and hospice communication; and 2) racial and socioeconomic disparities in end-of-life care and caregiving. Dr. Starr’s work integrates behavioral intervention design and implementation; ethics in vulnerable populations; qualitative and quantitative methods, including cost analyses; and advanced statistical methods (e.g., propensity score matching, predictive modeling). She has extensive experience working with teams and across disciplines and has received formal training in research methods and execution. She has a BA in English and Bioethics from Princeton University and a BSN, Master’s in Bioethics, and PhD in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She is completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania through mentored research with Dr. George Demiris, Dr. Salimah Meghani, Dr. Connie Ulrich, Dr. Nina O’Connor and Dr. Michael Perlis of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Debra Parker Oliver of Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. The long-term goal of her research program is to facilitate the implementation of evidence-based behavioral therapy interventions to 1) improve the mental and physical health and caregiving experiences of hospice family caregivers and 2) reduce racial and socioeconomic disparities in end-of-life care and caregiving.

Each attendee must complete the entire course to receive the certificate. Certificates will be distributed to attendees after returning the sign in sheet and evaluation to MHPCA.
