Speakers:
Angela Hollis Sells RN, President, AseraCare Hospice
Michael McHale, LNHA, MHA, President/CEO, Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care

Outcomes:
Angela will be speaking about the DOJ bringing suit against AseraCare and she will focus on the in depth review of the case that their company had to deal with during the suit. As hospice providers, we all work tirelessly to maintain compliance with hospice eligibility requirements. By law, eligibility is determined by physicians based on their clinical judgement of a person’s prognosis. Recently the interpretation of that law was questioned in the courtroom. The first jury trial between a hospice, AseraCare and the DOJ occurred in late 2015 with resolution in March of 2016. Angie Sells, RN, President of AseraCare Hospice will present a synopsis of that trial: background of the scenario leading to the trial,  a “day in the life of the trial”, outcomes of the trial and lessons learned from the trial. She will share practical compliance applications that may be implemented in any hospice to enhance their compliance programs.

Michael McHale will be giving a case study on “How a  Hospice Can Stay Viable in Uncertain Times byAligning with a Healthcare System.” Given the fast pace of change taking place in the overall healthcare environment, many community-based hospice providers are facing a number of challenges forcing them to reevaluate their organization’spath forward. This presentation will focus on one provider’s experience as they recognized the need tochange in order to protect the viability of their mission in service to the community.

To ensure their path forward, the leadership of the organization focused on:

  • Evaluation of possible strategic options
  • Growth, innovation and value as a means to remaining viable in new partnerships
  • Reshaping the organization to be a part of an integrated delivery system

This interactive session will encourage participants to think broadly about the changes that are takingplace in the healthcare environment and how their organization can respond to ensure future viability.
