Speaker: Susan Garcia Strauss, RN, MHS, CHCQM

Ms. Strauss worked with HopeHealth, Inc. in October of 2005 as the Vice President of Clinical Operations.  In January 2011, she was promoted to the position of Chief Compliance officer and oversaw the regulatory, education and quality divisions of the organization. She has been working in the hospice field since 1997.

Ms. Strauss is a native New Yorker and has been in nursing for 34 years.  She started as an ICU Nurse, and then transitioned into Home Health for several years. In 1997, she moved into Hospice Care.  Prior to joining HopeHealth, Inc., she was the VP of Regulations and Compliance for Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Florida. While at Hospice by the Sea, Ms. Strauss was responsible for developing the hospice bridge package known as the progressive disease management program (known as PDM).

During her time at HopeHealth she served as the point person for all regulatory, daily due diligence and compliance concerns, as well as all Medicare/Medicaid and third-party payor appeals, which included working with and testifying before Administrative Law Judges. She was in charge of the credentialing and licensure of all medical staff providers, the writing of all hospice operational policies, contracts, and procedures. She was instrumental in the licensing in the opening of the only free-standing hospice in-patient unit on Cape Cod.  She was the key contact for all Joint Commission and Federal and state surveys. She managed all the re-licensing and re-naming and other associated requirements following the merger of HopeHealth Inc. with Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island.

She serves as an educational presenter for NAHC (National Association for Home Care and Hospice), is a member of the Hospice Association of America Board Committee, and sits on the Massachusetts Federation of Hospice and Palliative Care Board since 2007.

She is also fluent in Spanish.

Ms. Strauss obtained her nursing degree in 1982 from Misercorida School of Nursing in the Bronx, NY. She subsequently attended Barry University in Miami, Florida, and earned both a Bachelor’s degree in Business (2004) and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (2005).  At the George Washington University in the District of Colombia she earned a Master of Health Science in 2009 with a concentration in End of Life Care. Ms. Strauss received her national certification as a Health Care Quality Manager in November 2011, and is a Diplomat of The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.
