Consultant and educator for Alzheimer’s Association St. Louis Chapter

Zoe has been working with people who are living with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia’s since 1977. She began her journey as a music therapist and continued her professional life working in a variety of settings, including skilled care, intermediate care, adult day care, and gero-psychiatry.

In the early 1990’s Zoe transitioned a traditional dementia care program in a skilled community to a social model of dementia care and worked several years as the coordinator of a progressive, person-centered dementia specific care community.

She worked as an education coordinator for over 8 years at the Alzheimer’s Association St. Louis Chapter where she developed curricula, provided consultation, and trained professional caregivers in the full range of dementia care issues. In August, 2012 she completed her certification as a Dementia Care Mapper. She retired from the Association in 1014, but continues with them as a dementia care consultant and educator.

In 1987, Zoe co-authored “Sense-Up: A Sensory Stimulation Manual for Regressed Sensory Deprived Elderly in Long Term Care Facilities”, which was distributed nation-wide. In 2009, she co-authored “Know Me Through My Eyes: Enriching End of Life Dementia Care”, a book using Tom Kitwood’s person centered care concepts with people who are living in late stage dementia.

Zoe has provided consultation and education nationally on all aspects of dementia care. She sits on the board of Missouri’s Culture Change coalition ( MC5) as the Education Committee Chairperson and is actively involved with the Pioneer Network, a national coalition advocating and educating for a change in elder care throughout the health care continuum.

Part 1.Understanding Dementia: Not All Dementia’s are the Same
Participants will be able to list the common symptoms of end stage Alzheimer’s Disease and distinguish how it is different from other late stage dementia’s ( Vascular, Lewey Body, Frontal Lobe, Parkinson’s).
Participants will be able to identify the different parts of the brain that controls “thinking” vs feeling ; Identify the “Sensory Strip and why it is important to understand in Late stage Dementia care giving.
Participants will be able to name the 6 Needs of people with Dementia and identify one staff- directed connection for each need.

Part 2. Behavior: The Big Misunderstanding
Participants will be able to define the concept of Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold.
Participants will be able to describe the concept of event-feeling-action in how it relates to alleviating catastrophic feelings (behavior).
Participants will be able to identify the 4 categories of common triggers that result in catastrophic reactions (behaviors).

Part 3. Purposeful and Meaningful Living: Building a Care giving Team with Families
Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between the old definition and the new definition of “activity”.
Participants will be able to list at least 5 “purposeful and meaningful activities” to connect with individuals in late/end stage Alzheimer’s Disease.
Participants will be able to list at least 3 ways staff can educate & involve family/friends in meaningful connections with their loved ones.

• This webinar will meet state requirements.
• Handouts such as “Ways to supplement food & drink”, “Finger foods”, and “101 Ways to spend time with older adults with Alzheimer’s/Dementia” will be given.

This program is eligible for up to 1.5 MO Nursing Contact Hours. Participants from Missouri interested in credit hours should indicate on the sign in sheet from each hospice their desire to receive credit hours.  There will be an additional $10.00 per person for contact hours.  Please make checks payable to MHPCA with a copy of your sign in sheet to receive credit for participants.  All participants wanting credit must sign the sheet and fill out an evaluation.
