Colleen has been a RN for 36 years working in Hospice, Palliative Care, and oncology in various roles.  Colleen has been a Nurse Practitioner for 10 years and practice full-time for BJC Hospice, a member of Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses  Association and has done Advanced Trainings by attending End-of-Life Consortium ELNEC for APRNs.  Colleen has lectured on hospice and palliative care for many years and enjoy educating nurses, medical students, physicians, and other health care professionals on hospice and palliative care.

Schedule:
9:30am – 10:00am:    Registration

10:00am – 11:00am:   Nausea and Vomiting in PC/Hospice Patients

• Participant will state the various etiology and pathophysiology of nausea
• Participants will through case review identify different causes for nausea and vomiting and appropriate interventions to alleviate

11:00am – 12:00pm:   Constipation in PC/Hospice Patients

• Participants will state and explain different etiologies, assessment, and pathophysiology of constipation
• Participants will identify different causes and appropriate interventions to prevent and alleviate constipation

12:00pm – 1:00pm:   Lunch

1:00pm – 2:00pm:   Introduction to Pain Management

• Participants will state different types of pain and able to complete a thorough pain assessment
• Participants will identify common obstacles to pain management
• Participants will state and apply knowledge of use of opioids and adjuvant medications in addition to non-pharmacologic interventions in pain management

2:00pm – 3:00pm:   Management of Advanced Pain in the PC/Hospice Setting

• Participants will state pharmacokinetics, benefits, side effects, risk factors, and important assessment of patients being treated with Methadone
• Participants will state and apply knowledge learned about use of dexamethasone in PC/Hospice setting including benefits, side effects, risks, and pertinent nursing assessment

3:00pm – 4:00pm:   Palliative Sedation in the PC/Hospice Setting

• Participants will state the definition of Palliative sedation and the common circumstances it is applied
• Participants will explore and identify the difference ethical principles around using palliative sedation at the end-of-life
• Participants will state and different processes used and the importance of policy and procedures around using Palliative Sedation

4:00pm – 5:00pm:   Increased Acuity in PC/Hospice patients at the End-of-Life

• Participants will identify the process of weaning a patient off a ventilator in the home and inpatient setting on hospice.
• Participants will describe LVADs function in patients with end stage heart failure and how to prepare patients and families when the decision is made to turn of the LVAD in the home hospice setting

The cost for this seminar is $200.00 for members & $250.00 for non-members.

Nurses CE’s will be an extra $25.00.

There are no refunds, however substitutions are welcome.
This seminar provides 6 Nursing Contact hours.

Upon completion of this course each attendee will be required to complete an evaluation. Each participant will then receive a certificate. Each attendee must complete the entire course to receive CE credits. Certificates will be distributed to attendees upon signing out of the seminar.
